Bill headed to Gov. Iveys desk could help those with substance use disorders get mental health treatment [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Lawmakers hope a bill that recently passed in an Alabama house committee will help more people with substance use disorders get life changing treatment.

This was such a big priority for several Alabama lawmakers that they sponsored identical companion bills, Senate Bill 240 as well as House Bill 359, to increase its chances of being signed into law. They say it could bridge the gap for people who need mental health treatment.

“We wanted to make sure that we brought forth a bill this session that help tackle some of the issues related to mental health in our state,” says Rep. Russell Bedsole, who is a sponsor of HB359, the identical companion bill to SB240.

Both bills would allow probate judges to consider substance abuse disorder along with mental health issues when it comes to involuntary commitments.
