Beloved African lion at Phoenix Zoo dies after cancer battle [Video]

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Phoenix Zoo staff are mourning the loss of a beloved animal who was a favorite to many children and families. Staff announced that the zoo’s 8-year-old African male lion, Boboo, was humanely euthanized after a cancer battle.

Zookeepers noticed that Boboo was experiencing rapid weight loss, loss of interest in food, feeling lethargic and not responding to medical treatments. Veterinarians examined Boboo and discovered an aggressive form of cancer in both his kidneys and spleen.

Due to Boboo’s condition, staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize the beloved cat. Staff say he had an annual exam in May with a clean bill of health, showing just how rapid the cancer progressed.

“Boboo was loved by his keepers, Zoo staff, members and guests. The Zoo will definitely be quieter without his familiar roars and calls. We are comforted that he became a part of his own pride this year …
