Baton Rouge doctor joins other researchers to study possible causes of Long COVID [Video]

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A researcher from Pennington Biomedical Research Center will be a part of an award-winning study on Long COVID.

Pennington’s Executive Director Dr. John Kirwan will be a co-principal investigator on Pathobiology in Recover of Metabolic and Immune Systems’ (PROMIS) study on Long COVID. The National Institute of Health has given the study’s researchers over $802,000.

Long COVID is used to describe symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath and trouble sleeping. Long COVID occurs after the initial diagnosis of COVID-19 and happens more often in people who have severe symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“The PROMIS study will help us better understand what is driving Long COVID,” said Dr. Kirwan. “In the early days of the pandemic, Pennington Biomedical directed its resources to address the urgent health needs of our population.
