Ashes of Vietnam War paratrooper spread during parachute jump in Italy [Video]

DENVER (KDVR) — Sgt. James Dassinger was a Vietnam War paratrooper. It was his job to jump out of aircraft and into harm’s way.

How do you honor that kind of soldier? It’s something his daughter Cindy was trying to determine when he died just a few weeks ago here in Colorado.

“He ultimately died of colon cancer,” she said.

As it turns out, a little coordination, coincidence and kismet led to the ultimate tribute: one last jump from a military aircraft, where his ashes would be spread in a landing zone by a soldier who does now what he used to do.

“My dad would just be thrilled to be with him,” she told FOX31.

Dassinger was in the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam. As it turns out, that’s the very same unit a close family friend is currently attached to.
