Aquarium announces passing of viral stingray [Video]

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Aquarium and Shark Lab by Team ECCO in Hendersonville announced that Charlotte, a stingray who went viral, has passed away.

Charlotte’s pregnancy went viral after the aquarium said in February that an ultrasound confirmed she was carrying eggs – despite being housed without a male ray.

In May, the aquarium said Charlotte developed a rare reproductive disease. They said research and details were limited about the disease, but in June, it caused the stingray to no longer be pregnant.

The aquarium said after continuing treatment with her medical care team and specialist, Charlotte passed away on June 30.

“The Team ECCO family appreciates your continued love and support while we navigate this great loss,” the aquarium said.

Team ECCO said the aquarium will remain temporarily closed while staff continue to care daily for other fish and animals.
