Alzheimers Foundation of America encouraged by new drug closer to FDA approval [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Federal health advisers are recommending a new Alzheimer’s drug from Eli Lilly that slows the progression of the disease.

This means there’s more hope on the horizon for the 7 million people nationwide suffering with Alzheimer’s and their loved ones.

Charles Fuschillo, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America president and CEO, says the latest drug, Donanemab, shows evidence it clears amyloid plaque in the brain of early-stage Alzheimer’s patients, which helps slow the disease’s progression.

Fuschillo says they had nearly 900 people in an 18-month clinical trial which showed the progression slowed by 37%, which he says is significant. Though it isn’t exactly a cure, Fushcillo says this new therapy is an important step in the right direction.
