According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, Alabama is the fifth poorest state in the country, with one in four children facing food insecurity.As the summer months approach, some parents and caregivers are concerned about how their kids will be fed, as Alabama has opted out of the Summer EBT program this year.The state is working to add it starting next year, but for some families, that’s not soon enough.”Somebody needs to overturn that decision in 2024, because people like me and some worse than me with several kids and stuff, we depend on that, we depend on that to feed our kids,” said Wanda Bryant.After losing her daughter back in 2020, Wanda Bryant now takes care of her three grandchildren, ages 12, 13 and 17.This will be her first summer without the help from the program.It provides families with $40 per child each month during the summer to …
